Plant your Vidalia onion plants as soon as possible. The sooner they are in the ground in spring, the larger the ultimate bulb size. Prepare the soil by making raised beds. Onions grow best on well drained, loose soil such as loamy sand. Amend the soil with compost and about one pound of 10-10-10 fertilizer per 20 square feet of bed. Plant the onion plants about 4 inches apart, slightly buried in the soil and water well. Keep the plants weeded and well watered all spring and summer. When 1/4 of the tops have naturally fallen over, begin harvesting.
