|I have just purchased Sugar Snap pea seeds. As you will see by my question, I am a novice gardner. I did not realize the plants grew to tall vines. Will they grow unsupported? Must they have a trellis or string support?|
|Yes, Sugar Snap peas can grow to 6 to 8 feet tall! They will definitely need support. The easiest support to use is fencing such as chicken wire. It doesn't have to be 6 to 8 feet tall, just 4 - 5 will be enough to support your peas. Plant the peas in double rows about 6 inches apart. In between the rows stake your fence, staking it every 5 feet or so. When the peas germinate they will naturally look for something to grow on and the fence will be right there. Plus you'll have peas on both sides of the fence making for a larger harvest.
