We have planted 8 Sweet Broom bushes in the spring, they were doing great till one after the other they lost all their flowers and leaves...we have followed the planting instructions on the Home Depot tag....is this normal until the plant gets established or is there another reason?
Thank you for your feedback,
|Sweet broom does lose its flowers at the end of summer, so that's normal, but they are evergreen plants so losing leaves is a concern. They require well draining soils and can suffer from root rot if the soils remain too wet for too long. I'd prune it back a bit to see if that encourages new growth. If not, you may want to dig up once of the plants to check the root system. Healthy roots are creamy white inside; dead or rotting roots will be rusty brown or blackish brown. If the roots look healthy, replant the broom. If not, you may need to replace all the plants. Hope your brooms recover!|
