|This is the first winter for our topiary shrub in Michigan. It is in a large resin planter facing South.
There is no overhead protection. We have bought stakes and burlap so far hoping this will help. When and how do we apply burlap for protection?
Thank you Ruth
|I'm afraid the answer really depends upon the plant you are growing. Some are quite winter hardy and others need lots of protection from the elements. The stakes and burlap will certainly block the wind but won't do anything to protect the roots and planter from freezing solid during your winter weather. Start by thinking about the insulating material you can wrap around the planter to help keep it from freezing/thawing during the winter and spring months. Then try to find out whether the plant itself is winter hardy in your region. If so, minimal insulation is needed. If not, you may have to move your plant to a more protected spot. Hope this information helps!|
