There are only a few things you need to do to prepare your lawn for winter. Continue to mow regularly: Raise your mower's cutting height one notch for the last month of summer mowing. Mow in a different direction - if you usually mow east to west, change to north-south. And, feed in late October or early November with a winterizing fertilizer (such as Scott's Winterizer). Specially formulated winterizing fertilizers are higher in potassium than regular lawn food. Potassium is the nutrient that makes grasses more winter hardy. Winterizers should be applied as the last fertilizer application of the growing season.
