I started a bing cherry tree from seeds from the store a year ago. The tree grew straight up with small shoot with leaves but no branches grew out of the tree. I looked in the encyclopedia and the leaves look correct. Is this the way it should be or is it mutant? I grew a peach tree and it doing fine.

Your cherry is doing just fine - it's normal for a baby cherry seedling to look like an unbranched stick. In fact, when you buy fruit tree seedlings from a nursery, they are often one-three year old "whips" - unbranched seedlings. It should start branching out this season.
