Burrrrrrrr its getting colder in Chicago and I want to cut my grass one more time. should the grass be left long or be cut short for winter?

Cut your lawn the normal height for your last mowing. It won't grow much if the temperatures are below 40F. The inch and a half or two inch height of the blades will help insulate the roots over the winter. In the spring you can begin cutting when the grass grows about 3" high.
