|We planted four swamp hibiscus last spring that absolutely thrived over the summer. They have now lost most of their leaves and buds and are turning brown. Should we be trimming them back to ensure they come back in full bloom next year? Is there anything special we should be doing to protect them from the mild winters we experience here in South Carolina?|
You need not trim them now but they will die to the ground for sure with the first freeze. At that time you can cut back all the dead top growth and mulch the base to protect it from winter cold. The plants should resprout when the weather warms up in spring.
