You can cut off the spent flowers on your dianthus but wait until new growth begins in the spring before cutting back the rest of the plant. Dianthus often dies down to the ground in the winter. When this happens, cover the plants with several inches of organic matter, shredded leaves, or even pine boughs to protect the roots. In the spring, brush away or remove the mulching material and cut away any dead plant parts. New stems, leaves and flowers will follow. Enjoy! |
