I have 3 butterfly bushes that are in the same flower bed and need to be moved. I want to move 2 of them. They have been there about 18 months. I live in Lewisville, TX zone 8b. Do I move them now or in the spring and do I prune them when I move them? They are both over 5' tall. I'm moving them because they are too big for the space they are in and shade out everything else in the bed. Thanks for your help.

Although you can move your butterfly bushes now, it would be best not to prune them back at this time. When you prune you encourage new growth which will not have enough time to harden off before winter weather. You'll have to prune them back again in the spring, so why not wait until then to do your transplanting and pruning? In the early spring, prune your butterfly bushes down to a managable size and then replant them. Water well to help settle the soil. You should see new growth within a few weeks of the move. Best wishes with the move!
