Sod or seed for a lawn - Knowledgebase Question

I have a small backyard in the Sacramento Valley and I need to put in a lawn before the rainy season. Should I try to seed the backyard or use sod? It is December so our sunny days are definitely limited and I am worried that there is not enough time for the seeds to germinate.

If you need an instant lawn, sodding is your best option. If you sow seeds now, in December, they may or may not germinate and establish a good root system before frost arrives. Seeding in March or April will allow the grass to grow and establish by late spring. So, if instant lawn is important, sod; if you can wait, plan to sow seeds in early spring.
