|My lawn is very bad. It has several different weeds and appears to be several different kinds of grass. Is there a cheap way to repair it?|
|If your lawn is more than 4-5 years old, I suspect some native grasses have become established. Grass seeds are carried by the wind and by birds and when the seeds arrive, they find your lawn an wonderful place to sprout and to grow. The least expensive way to renovate your lawn is to hand dig the weeds, roots and all, and rake out the patches of grasses that you want removed, then reseed the bare areas. Depending upon your gardening region and winter weather, you may have to wait until spring to reseed. Grass seeds germinate and grow best in warm weather but they will also sprout if temperatures are above 40F. So if you're in a mild winter region, you can renovate your lawn now. Otherwise, you'll want to wait until spring. Once you've gotten rid of the weeds and the patches of native grasses you can put your lawn on a regular feeding, watering and mowing schedule to help it grow thick and lush. Thick lawns tend to crowd out new weeds and keep weed seeds from sprouting.
Best wishes with your lawn!
