I'm a first time gardener and I'm looking for annuals that have some height to them, starting with 12 inches and higher. Could you recommend some by name?

Well, of course you have sunflowers (Helianthus), which range from 16 inches to 15 feet tall! Here are some others: cockscomb (Celosia) (30"), cornflower (Centaurea) (3-4 feet), cleome (4 feet), strawflower (Helichrysum) (14" to 4 feet), salvia (14-20") Mexican sunflower (Tithonia) (3 to 6 feet), snapdragon (Antirrhinum) (16" to 4 feet), zinnia (10" to 2 1/2 feet). Consult plant tags in store to determine which ones will thrive in your region.
