Avocado leaves can curl and die at the margins if the plant is overwatered. Adjust your watering so that the soil has a chance to dry out slightly between waterings. A good test is to water thoroughly then wait several days and stick your finger into the potting soil. If it is still moist an inch below the surface, you won't need to water for a few more days. Keeping it in the nursery pot won't hurt the plant but you'll need to check frequently to make sure it doesn't dry out, either. Do the finger test and eventually you'll figure out how long your tree can go between waterings. If the roots are escaping out of the drainage holes, it's either time to repot or to plant in the ground. Best wishes with your avocado tree!
