Asparagus crowns do look a bit peculiar when you first unpack them. New growth will come from the top of the crown, opposite from the long roots. When planting, just drape the tentacle-like roots over a small mound of soil in the prepared trench, and cover the crown and roots with about two-inches of soil. Continue adding soil every two weeks until the soil is slightly mounded above surface level (to allow for settling).
