Sclerotinia disease, or white mold, affects sunflowers and several other vegetable crops. The pathogen is soil borne so planting your sunflowers in different garden spots will help stop the early infection of your sunflowers. There are differences in the susceptibility of certain hybrids to Sclerotinia so next time you purchase sunflower seeds, look for those with resistance to white mold. Rotating your crops and planting resistant varieties are the only controls currently available. Best wishes with your sunflowers!
