Cannas are tuberous rooted perennials, native to the tropics. Plant after the last frost in your area, in rich, loose soil. Set them five-inches deep and 10-inches apart. Prepare the garden bed by incorporating compost, leaf mold, aged manure or peat moss prior to planting. Remove faded flowers after blooming, and after all flower clusters have bloomed, cut the stalk to the ground. You should lift and store canna roots over the winter and replant them in the spring, after all danger of frost has passed.
