I live in Iowa and have several whiskey barrel planters. I want to plant a tomatoe in one of them. What other plant(s) could I plant with it to make it attractive? Also, what tomatoe varieties are are best suited for being grown in a planter?

Nearly any plant that enjoys the same growing conditions as tomatoes will make good companions in your planter. Petunias are good, herbs such as basil and parsley will work, too. I'd choose trailing plants so they can spill over the edges of the whiskey barrels. You can use either patio tomatoes or determinate varieties. Determinate tomatoes grow to a specific size then flower and set fruit. The fruit ripens all at once. Indeterminate tomato plants continue to grow and produce fruit all summer long. While it is nice to have a long harvest season, indeterminate tomato plants will continue to grow all summer long, eventually overtaking the whiskey barrel and beyond. So, when choosing tomatoes, choose determinate varieties.
