Mulch - Knowledgebase Question

Bonita Springs, Fl

I live in a community where the outside lawn and shrubs are cared for. Red mulch is put down 2x yr. I just planted some annuals and mulch was deliberately not placed around them. When I questioned it was told mulch would kill the plants.A few weeks later they did die but I don't know if that was the cause or the cold temps at night. I live in Bonita Springs,FL. Thanks.

Red mulch won't kill plants, unless it is placed too close to allow air circulation and too thick to allow water penetration to the roots. I think your annuals were probably victims of the cold temperatures, not the lack of mulch material. Better luck with your next crop of annuals!
