April is a good month to begin renovating your lawn. Start by raking out any dead patches and then dig out any weeds. Overseed the bare spots and as much of the rest of your lawn that looks thin. You can cover the seeds with a light layer of peat moss to keep birds from feeding on the seed. Keep the lawn moist and the new grass should sprout in 10-14 days. Don't feed until the new grass is up and growing. You can fertilize in late April with a 3-1-2 ratio of NPK, in amounts as recommended on the fertilizer label. Feed again in June and again in September. Enjoy your new lawn!
