I understand strawberry plants should be taken out each year in Florida. Is this true? If so, I would like to start plants for fall planting. Does Burpee sell seeds, and when should I begin my seedlings? |
In Florida strawberry plants should not be held over as thery are in northern areas. According to the Florida Vegetable Guide these varieties do best in Florida: Florida 90, Chandler, Dover, Florida Belle, Oso Grande, Sequoia, Tufts, Douglas and Tioga. In your area, you should order your plants and set them out from Sept. 15 to Nov. 15. Burpee has strawberry plants listed on page 105 of the 1998 catalog, but they do not offer any from the above list. Check with local nurseries to find out when they'll have plants available, or mail order from Lewis Strawberry Nursery, PO Box 24, Rocky Point, NC 28457; ph# 910/675-2394.
