Start by deciding what you'd like in your yard - perennials? shrubs? vegetables? Once you have an idea of what you'd like to include, make a rough sketch of the yard and make notes as to what areas are sunny and which are shady. Then make circles, squares or free forms where you want specific types of plants. For instance, a perennial garden where you can enjoy it from an inside window, an herb garden close to the door for convenience, etc. Then it's time to choose your plants. There are lots of books in the library, or you can visit public gardens and parks and cruise through your local nurseries for ideas.

Before planting, amend the planting beds with organic matter so your new plants will be happy in their new homes.

Best wishes with your new landscape~
