|This grass is the worst. How can I get it green earlier in the year and keep it green longer. In NY it greens in late May and goes brown again by Mid July. It goes green again in mid Sept and goes Brown by Halloween|
|Zoysia grass thrives in heat and it grows well in some parts of New York, but not all. It could be that you are battling environmental conditions because you're in the wrong zone for zoysia to thrive.
Although zoysiagrass is considered to be a drought tolerant species, it ceases growth and begins to discolor during extended dry periods. To maintain growth zoysiagrass requires 1 to 1 and a half inches of water per week during mid-summer, although it can survive on less than 1 inch of water per week. Water should be applied 2 to 3 times per week depending on temperatures and soil conditions. Sandy soils require more frequent irrigations than heavier clay soils; and, as temperatures increase, irrigation frequency must increase.
Aside from adequate watering and high heat, there's not much else you can do to make your zoysia green up faster or stay green longer. Wish I had a better answer for you!
