| To avoid weed problems, a pre-emergent herbicide in February will provide control. Preemergence herbicides are applied to the lawn prior to the weed seed germination. Postemergence herbicides are applied directly to emerged weeds. If the weeds are already present, you can use a post-emergent herbicide. Atrazine is one of the most common preemerge herbicides sprayed on lawns to control broadleaf weeds. Atrazine can be applied to dormant Bermuda, or actively growing/ dormant Centipede and St. Augustine. Atrazine does an excellent job controlling lawn burweed, henbit, lespedeza, and many other broadleaf weed species. If you decide to spray atrazine on Bermuda, make sure it is dormant to avoid injury. Pendimethalin (Halts) is a granular preemerge herbicide that controls most annual grasses and certain broadleaf weeds. It does an excellent job controlling crabgrass, goose grass, and Texas panicum. Pendimethalin can be used on centipede, Bermuda, and St. Augustine as a preemerge herbicide that needs to be applied around February 15. Postemergence products such as Image will kill weeds but is not recommended for use in all turfgrasses. Be sure to read the product label. Best wishes with your lawn! |
