What do I need to do to my asters to keep them from getting spindly and unattractive late in the summer?

If they grow spindly, they either are not getting enough direct sunshine, or you are not deadheading on a regular basis. Make sure they're in a sunny spot and then, after the flowers are spent, cut the flowering stem down to encourage new flowering stems. You can also pinch out the tips of the stems to encourage additional growth. These practices should result in full and bushy plants with lots of flowering stems. Enjoy!
