|what is a basal offset? i think someone cut me off one. how do i make roots for it. Ponytail palm|
|An offset looks like a sucker growing from the base of the plant. You can root it to make a new ponytail palm. Here's how:
Carefully remove the offsets and place in a new pot with well drained soil or sand to encourage roots. Cover with a plastic bag to conserve moisture and keep in a warm, sunny location. Rooting hormone is helpful, but not necessary -- some people apply it to the base. Or, if the offset is still attached to the plant, moist sphagnum moss can be wrapped around the base of the offsets without removing them from the main plant; keep it moist and in direct contact with the offset. Some people wrap it in plastic. After roots have sprouted, the offset can be separated and repotted.
Good luck with your new ponytail palm!
