It is not necessary to prune a crepe myrtle. Crepe myrtle blooms on the new growth of the season, so any pruning is best done in late winter to early spring. The primary goal would be removal of any winter-damaged wood or crossing branches. After that, some gardeners prune for size control. If you do get into the routine of pruning your crepe myrtle, do it in late winter to encourage new growth and flowers and then lightly trim again after the flowers fade and you will get additional new growth and a second flush of bloom later in the summer. Enjoy!
