You can start watermelon seeds indoors for planting outside when the soil is warm. They need lots of room for their roots and they won't transplant well if they get too large so keep an eye on them and plant them outside after they have developed only 4 sets of leaves. Since they need lots of root room, plant the seeds in tall styrofoam cups or quart sized milk cartons. Be sure to punch holes in the bottoms of the containers for drainage.
