last year i planted autunm ferns. should i cut back the dead leaves or leave them? thank you.

Dryopteris erythrosora, or Autumn ferns, are slow to come up in the spring and since there is still a chance for frost in your garden, I would leave them alone and not cut them back until new fronds begin to emerge from the center of the plant. At that time you can remove the dead fronds. Until then, the dead fronds will offer the crown of the plant some cold protection. Best wishes with your garden!
