North suburban Chicago. In the woods behind my home I have cleared out the buckthorn and now want to trim back the overgrown bush honeysuckle. Is now a good time of year to cut it back and how far?

Bush honeysuckle is traditionally pruned during its dormant season but since it is so very early in the spring, I think you can safely prune it back now. It will take hard pruning. If it is well established you can prune it down to almost ground level. If it is still reasonably young, you can prune it back by one third without harm. Best wishes with your landscape!
