The safest process is to dig the weeds out, roots and all. If there are more thistle weeds than strawberry plants, it might be time to remove all the strawberries, till the area to bring the weed roots up to the surface, remove them and then replant the strawberries. Wish there were an easier solution! After removing all the weeds you might consider laying weed barrier cloth over the entire bed and making slits in it to plant your strawberries. Not only will the weed barrier keep new weeds from sprouting, it will also keep your berries cleaner by keeping soil and sand from splashing onto them. Just a thought.
