Hi! Could you please tell me the best grass to have in a backyard that is part shade and part full sun, has rocky soil, is in Zone 5 and can withstand 2 large dogs? Is seed or sod better? When should we plant it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you for your time!!

Not many turfgrasses will thrive in the shade so you may have to reseed the shady areas every couple of years. Tall fescue is the most shade tolerant; Kentucky blue is the most tolerant of foot traffic. I would invest in sod rather than seeding the lawn. Sod has the advantage that the root system is already established so it will hold up better to foot traffic and doggie paws. You can have sod installed any time in the spring, when the temperatures remain above 50F. Enjoy your yard!
