Start by sketching out areas you would like to have flower beds, lawn and trees. If you start small you can concentrate on one area at a time, install the plant material and go on to the next. There are dozens of books in the library if you need ideas, and hundreds of plants at your local garden center. Visit there an see which plants appeal to you that you would like to incorporate into your landscape. Note whether they prefer sunny or shady growing sites and pencil them in on your drawing, taking note of their mature size. Then begin preparing the soil in each area for planting. Spread 4-5 inches of organic matter over the top of the soil, dig or till it in to a depth of 8-10 inches, rake the area level and plant. If you do one area at a time you'll eventually have an attractive backyard. Enjoy!
