We're starting a community garden on an urban lot. We'll use raised beds for vegetables, but are wondering if we need to worry about heavy metal contamination with fruit trees or berry bushes?

Typically not. If the soil is contaminated I would avoid planting underground crops such as potatoes, onions or carrots where the edible part of the plant would come in direct contact with the suspect soil.
