we live in the mtns east of ABQ.,NM. Temp can fluctuate considerably and I have a difficult time finding plants/trees that will grow. My property is mainly cedar and pinon with a meadow area. I need grasses and other types of trees for wind protection and further privacy. Can you suggest something. I'm at about 7,000 ft.

I think your best choices are from New Mexico high altitude native plants. Native plants can adapt to the growing conditions and thrive under the worst weather old man winter throws at you. Consider these:
Fourwing Saltbush; Atriplex canescens (Goosefoot?Chenopodiaceae); Wax Currant Ribes inebrians (Saxifrage-Saxifragaceae); Apache Plume Fallugia paradoxa (rose-Rosaceae); Rabbitbrush ?Chamisa? ? Chrysothamnus nauseosus.

Gambel Oak Quereus gambeli; One-Seeded Juniper Juniperus monosperma; Rocky Mountain Juniper Juniperus scopuiorum; Ponderosa Pine Pinus ponderosa; Pinon Pine Pinus edulis; New Mexico Locust Robinia neomexicana.
