Squirrels, skunks, and raccoons are all likely culprits. They dig into the sod looking for grubs. (Raccoons roll back the sod - aren't they clever?) You might want to check to see what the grub population is in your turf by waiting until July and cutting into and lifting up a one foot square section of your lawn. If you find 10 or more white grubs hanging onto the roots, you have a large enough population to warrant control. Milky Spore Disease, Merit, or Grubex are all registered for use against grubs. Although they are sometimes marketed for spring application, they should be applied in July, since that's when the grubs are most susceptible. Be sure to apply according to label directions. Best wishes with your lawn!
