Some seed packages say to start inside, others say plant in the ground. I wonder if I can start all vegetable seeds inside and plant them in the ground once the threat of frost is gone?
Thanks for your consideration.
I'm a first time vegetable gardner and live in zone 5. Thank you,Charleene

The seed packages that recommend starting the seeds indoors are those that take a long time to mature (Check the back of the package to find the date to maturity), or the seed company knows you're anxious to get started and know that those types of plants will transplant well. Typically your growing season is about 90-100 days because your first frost of the season can arrive anytime between mid September and the first week of October. Naturally you will want to be able to harvest your veggies before the first frost. You probably can plant cool season veggies in the garden by the first of June and warm season veggies by mid=June. To answer your question, most veggies can be started indoors. Squash, pumpkins, cucumbers and corn do not transplant well so those should be started directly in the garden. Best wishes with your new garden!
