I need to fill in a hillside with something to hold the dirt. Area is pretty much shaded by large tree. Would you suggest a ground cover? Some of the oak tree's big roots are showing. Can I cover them with dirt and then plant something over them? Thanks

Shade tolerant groundcovers include Blue Shade, pachysandra, Asiatic jasmine, Vinca major, and Confederate jasmine. All will grow quickly in shade and will flower all season long. Don't bother covering the exposed roots - the vining plants will disguise them. Besides, it can be risky to cover over exposed roots - they can actually suffocate if you change the soil level.
