If you can't get grass to grow in your backyard it may be time to remove everything and start all over again. Grasses grow best when soil is loose rather than compacted, and they need deep watering (once or twice a week rather than daily sprinklings). If you'd like to start all over again, rototill the area and rake out all the old grass and weeds. Then spread compost or other organic matter over the top of the soil and rototill that in. Then broadcast your seeds and keep the area moist. Your new grass should sprout in 7-14 days.

Poison Ivy is difficult to eradicate. There are chemicals that will kill it, but they will kill other plants, too, so you need to use them with caution. Or, try wearing gloves and just pulling the ivy out. Herbicides work best in the fall months so you can attempt to control it then. Cut each vine off at almost ground level and paint Round Up on the stem. This should move down to the roots and kill the roots of the plant. Hope this helps you get control of the poison ivy.
