When in doubt, plant the bulb on its side and it will send the shoot upwards. If you've planted your bulbs upside down (I confess I have!), the bulb will sprout as usual and the shoot will travel around the bulb and up to the top of the soil. It takes a lot of energy for it to do this, though, so don't leave them upside down for more than a season. When you dig your bulbs and replant them, make sure the pointy end goes up!
