What could cause a fig tree's leaves to brown, curl up and die in about 2 days

If the fig did not experience a deep freeze and you did not spray a pesticide on or near the plant, I would suspect there's a problem with the root system. Overly wet soils can cause root rot which is can be sudden death to plants. Root rots will collapse the vascular system and the leaves will curl up and die almost overnight.
