The best thing you can do for any garden bed is to add organic matter and dig it into the soil to help loosen it and help it hold moisture and nutrients. Start by removing any weeds and the spreading 4-5 inches of compost, aged manure, shredded leaves or any other organic material that's readily available in your local area. Dig it into the soil to 8-10 inches and then level the soil and plant. (Or work around your existing plants.) After planting, spread an additional 2-3 inches of compost or other organic matter over the bare soil to help suppress weeds. At the end of the season, dig the organic matter into the soil and add fresh. After a few years of this practice you will have beautiful garden loam and a very productive garden. Enjoy!
