It is really difficult to get a lawn to thrive beneath maple trees. While you can seed a lawn, you'll need to overseed it every year in order to get it to grow. Grass doesn't like to grow in shade and the soil will be dry because the tree's roots will be out searching for moisture and nutrients. Anything you plant there will have to compete with the tree's roots for moisture and nutrients. Instead of lawn, how about growing a shade tolerant, dry soil ground cover such as pachysandra or vinca minor?
