I recently purchased a rose that is called a patio rose - it grows about 1 1/2 feet wide and up to 2 feet high. I am wondering if this is the same thing as a minature rose and how I should care for it.

Miniature roses are classified as roses that reach 4" in height up to 4'. Sounds like your patio rose is in fact, a miniature. Miniature roses aren't hard to care for, in fact they are pretty tough plants as they are almost always propagated and grown on their own roots. Your mini rose has smaller roots that don't go very deeply into the soil so you will need to keep a close eye on watering. Don't let her dry out, a layer of mulch at the base of the rose may be helpful. You should regularly remove spent blooms (deadhead) to promote new blooms and vigor. Fertilizing is different for minis too, a good rule of thumb is half as much, twice as often. Prune a mini in the same fashion you would prune a hybrid tea.
