Forsythia, like most shrubs, are best transplanted in the spring or in the fall, when the temperatures are cool. Prepare the planting hole prior to digging your plant so you'll expose the roots to as little air and light as possible. Plant so the shrub is at the same depth as in the original garden spot, backfill with the soil you removed from the hole, tamp in gently, and water well to remove any air pockets around the roots. Since spring is the most active growth period for forsythia, it should quickly become established in its new home.
