I am interested in becoming a landscaper. What secondary education would be helpful in achieving this goal?

Have you checked with your state agricultural/technical college? I'm sure they could guide you in setting up an effective selection of classes. Courses in soil science, design, plant science and identification, integrated pest management, small business management, equipment use, etc. I also suggest interviewing some landscapers in the region where you're interested in setting up business, and find out what their path has been like. See if they'll let you work out with them on jobs to get a feel for the planning, skills and work involved. Maybe you'll find a mentor! If you're interested in pursuing alternative or cutting edge techniques, contact the organic growers association in your state. Trade publications are also good places to look for ideas (schools are often listed in the classifieds section). Contact your state agricultural extension office (ph# 913/532-5820) for more information, and good luck with your new career!
