Hi - we live in mid NJ and are looking for advice regarding a plan for a garden directly in front of our house (north side which gets AM & early PM sun). The area is 28 ft wide and 8 ft deep. Would really appreciate advice re recommended trees, bushes, flowers & a plan for arranging them to make the most of our space.

Thanks

Mike

It sounds as though the area would be perfect for hydrangeas and azaleas but if you prefer non flowering evergreens, boxwoods would work, too. Use these types of shrubs as a backdrop for smaller perennials and annuals. Astilbes and Dicentra (bleeding heart) would bring additional color to the area. For a focal point, consider Weeping Atlas Cedar or a weeping Japanese Maple. Once you've decided on your favorite plants, set them out in the area and move them around until you are happy with their arrangement. Be sure to note the mature sizes of the plants and space accordingly so each has plenty of elbow room. You can fill in with annuals for seasonal color. I know you'll have fun putting together just the right look for your new garden. Enjoy!
