Emperor Japanese Maple won't take afternoon sun in your growing region. For best growth and appearance, provide filtered afternoon sun. Your maple will adapt to clay soil so don't amend the planting hole. If you do, the roots will remain in the nicely amended soil instead of venturing out into native soil. Best wishes with your tree.
