|My zucchini are blooming like crazy but the bloom just dries |
up and falls off...no zucchini. What can I do?
|Squash plants have both male and female blooms on the same plant. Male blooms are attached by a slender stalk, while female blooms have a miniature of the squash fruit at the base of the bloom. Usually the first blooms to open are male blooms, hence, no fruit. Female blooms begin to show up later.|
If you have both types and still get no fruit, the problem is likely pollination. Avoid insecticides that can kill bees and other pollinators. You can pollinate the plants yourself by the following technique: pick a male blossom in the morning, remove the petals, and dab the structures containing the orange pollen onto the structure that extends out in the center of the female flowers. Repeat the process every day or two until bees arrive to take over the job!
