I first of all have some small but unsightly patches in my front lawn it seems to be growing in but taking its time to get there. Was wondering if maybe I should put in some seed to help this along or sod, or just let it go and eventually it will take over...the patches seem to be from drought and not being watered properly.

I think you are on the right track. Scratch the bare soil first and then reseed and cover the seeds with compost. Keep the newly seeded areas moist and the grass seeds will germinate in 7-14 days. Enjoy your landscape!
